Nichols Quarter Horse Report

WHY WOULD ANYONE BET QUARTER HORSES
(How it happened to me)

It all started at the Derby in 2006 and it was a last thing ever expected. My wife and I went to Delta Downs to eat at the clubhouse and bet the Derby. I had not bet races seriously for over a decade, but I still love the game like to go bet the Triple Crown races and the Breeders' Cup. I bet a good amount on the winner that day and had a pocket full of money so we decided to stay bet the quarter horses. What a fiasco! I had a racing form, but did not have a clue. I thought how does anyone know which horse to bet. In quarter horse racing the only gauge of speed is what they call the speed index. I went home that night with less dollars in my pocket regretting the decision to stay and bet the quarter horses.

On the way home I kept thinking how confusing the racing form was when it comes to quarter horses. The more I thought about it, if I was confused then most others were probably confused as well. After all I have been betting the races for over 30 years. Then the light bulb went off, what if there was a way to tell which horse was actually the fastest. Could this be like the old days in thoroughbred horse racing? Back in the days before Beyer came out with his speed figures, when hard work paid big dividends. I like playing with numbers, so I wanted to see if there was some way to quantify which horse was the fastest. After a few weeks I created a crude speed figure and decided to give it a try. I put $100 into a Brisnet account quickly turn that $100 into $1000. Then I went on to refine the number and now it is accurate on tracks across the country. Please check out my racing form designed for quarter horses the “Articles” page.

I will admit I was a thoroughbred snob, although I had bet quarter horses before I always thought it was a little below my skill level. Of coarse back then it was easy to make money on thoroughbred horse races. Like a lot of things in life until you really try it you do not know how much fun it can be. So now that I know that quarter horses racing is a beatable game I set out to refine my speed figure. I was definitely in new territory. If you do not believe me just Google quarter horse racing and see how little information there is on how to handicap quarter horses. Quarter horse races are in the same spot thoroughbreds were back in the 70's and 80's. Most people still bet quarter horses like you would thoroughbreds, which is fine with me. They  just will not win many races. Many track announcers and handicappers at tracks that race quarter horses do not  understand the game either. The exception is Don Stevens & Chad Cooper at Delta Downs who are an excellent quarter horse handicappers. Luckily most of the patrons do not take their advice.

Let me give you a couple examples of what you can expect in quarter horse races. How would you like to know the fastest horse in the race and get five to one odds on him? This happens all the time in quarter horse races. I put $20 to win on a horse and at EVD that paid $107 to win. This horse had run the one of the fastest times in the race. Of course it doesn’t happen every day, but it’s fun when it does. I've hit more $20 and $30 long shots in the last year than I ever had betting thoroughbreds. One last example, how would you like to see a thoroughbred race that has the champion Curlin in a regular allowance race or minor stakes race and get 8 to 5 odds? You will be surprised how often this situation happens.

Take time and learn the game, you will and have more fun and your wallet will appreciate it!!!!
